Meet The Keynote Presenter
Peter Greste - Professor of Journalism, Macquarie University | Executive Director, The Alliance for Journalists' Freedom
Professor Peter Greste is an academic, film maker, journalist, and author. He came to academia in 2018 after a 30-year career as an award-winning foreign correspondent for the BBC, Reuters, CNN and Al Jazeera, in some of the world’s most volatile places. Peter is best known for becoming a headline himself, when he and two of his colleagues were arrested in Cairo while working for Al Jazeera, and charged with terrorism offences. In letters smuggled from prison, Peter described their incarceration as an attack on press freedom.
In his keynote which will open the Australian OSINT Symposium 2025, Peter will draw on his lived experience as a journalist and press freedom advocate, to reflect on the ethical weight of working with information in today's world. Peter's perspective, grounded in a discipline that has long grappled with questions of public interest, transparency, and integrity, offers the OSINT community a powerful lens for considering how principles-based approaches can help build trusted, enduring capability.
